What is an ABC Cable
ABC Cable is short for Aerial Bundled Cable. It is a self-supported,PE or XLPE insulated cables used in low & medium voltage distribution lines.
It consists of three phase conductor and a neutral conductor (aluminum alloy) bundled together with or without a street lighting conductor. Due to its high strength of aluminum alloy, the neutral conductor used a messenger wire to support all cables.
ABC cable is allowed to have longer span length, lower mounting and simple installation and it also offers maximum personnel safety and protection. Due to its good resistance to abrasion, heat & coldness, moisture and sunlight, it assures high stability & reliability through long years of services. It is mostly popular in rural areas.

Some general info about an ABC Cable.
- What is an ABC Cable? ABC cables are lightweight stranded aluminium conductors, both single core and multi–cores, commonly used for power distribution lines, such as on construction sites and for secondary pole–to–pole service cables and street lighting. Unlike bare conductors which are installed and separated by air gaps, these ABC cables feature XLPE insulation material and, where necessary, a sheathing material, allowing them to be tightly bundled together. Additionally, steel wire supports similar to those used in ACSR can be included as a messenger wire.
- Types of ABC Cable ; Low Voltage ABC Cables are manufactured in accordance with multiple standards, such as British standard BS7870, French standard NF C33 209, Australasian standard AS/NZS 3560 Part 1, and IEC standards IEC 60502–1, TNB Specification, and HD 626 S1. They have a voltage rating of 0.6/1kV and meet Class II according to IEC 61140 to protect against electric shock. This type of ABC cable has an operating temperature range of –40oC to +80oC and can be installed in temperatures as low as –20oC. The phase conductors and the neutral conductor are both Class 2 stranded aluminium with core identification provided by ribs on the insulation; Medium Voltage ABC Cables are available with voltages of 6.35/11kV, 12.7/22kV and 19/33kV, manufactured in accordance with IEC 60502–2 and variants made specifically to Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 3599 Part 1. These higher voltage cables feature XLPE insulation and HDPE sheathing. Screening can be added upon request, in the form of light or heavy duty copper wire or tape depending on the installation parameters.
