OPGW Cable, also know as an optical ground wire, which is one type of fiber optic cable, an optical unit containing 12 to 144 G.652D or G.655 fibers, stranded together with some electrical wires, like Aluminum wire, aluminum alloy wire or aluminum cladding steel wire (ACS), installed on top of power transmission or distribution lines. these features make an OPGW cable have two functions of both grounding cable and fiber optical telecommunication. it is an ideal substitution of a traditional earth wire.

The advantages of an OPGW Cable include large transmission capacity, fast speed, suitability for long-distance transmission, resistance to electromagnetic induction and crosstalk interference, and the high mechanical performance, high conductivity, and good corrosion resistance of aluminum clad steel wire. . OPGW optical cable has double functions for both lightning protection and communication.  Therefore, OPGW optical cable is now widely used in overhead transmission line grounding. The use of OPGW optical cables as overhead ground wires has many advantages: ① low transmission signal loss, high communication quality, and the number of cores of the optical cable can be large; ② Good safety, less prone to theft and cutting, and less susceptible to destructive shooting; ③ Suitable for transmission lines with multiple voltage levels; ④ Fiber optic cables and conventional ground wires are integrated, avoiding the huge cost of duplicate construction and maintenance.

The exact type of OPGW Cable used in the project varies depending on the ice zone and the cross-section of the wire. In addition to meeting the cross-sectional requirements required by the regulations, it is also necessary to meet the requirements that when a line fault occurs, a large short-circuit current will pass through the ground wire, causing a sharp increase in temperature of the ground wire, which may cause damage to the ground wire.
