What is the difference between RS232 vs RS485

Serial port RS232 and RS485 are two different serial communication interface standards, which have the following differences:RS 232 485 port

1. The RS232 interface usually appears in the form of 9 pins (DB9) or 25 pins (DB25), while the RS485 interface does not have a specific physical shape, and different interfaces can be used according to actual situations.

2.The signal level value of the RS232 interface is relatively high, which can easily damage the chip of the interface circuit. Additionally, due to incompatibility with the TTL level, a level conversion circuit needs to be used to connect to the TTL circuit. However, the signal level of the RS485 interface is relatively low, compatible with the TTL level, and has strong anti-interference ability.

3.The maximum transmission distance of the RS232 interface is 15 meters and can only communicate point-to-point, with a maximum transmission rate of 20 Kb/s, while the RS485 interface has a maximum transmission distance of 1200 meters and a maximum transmission rate of 10 Mbps. At a transmission rate of 100 Kb/s, the maximum communication distance can be achieved.

4. The RS232 interface allows only one transceiver to be connected on the bus and cannot support multi station transmission and reception capabilities, while the RS485 interface allows up to 128 transceivers to be connected on the bus and has multi station communication capabilities.

5. The RS232 interface generally uses three core twisted pairs, three core shielded wires, etc., while the RS interface uses two core twisted pairs, two core shielded wires, etc. In high-speed and long-distance transmission, impedance matching specialized cables are also required.

If you want to perform RS485 communication on a computer, you need to add an RS232/RS485 conversion module. If you want to connect the USB port to an RS232 or RS485 device, you need to use a USB to serial converter.
